GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A decade after Forbes ranked Grand Rapids the second-worst large U.S. metro area for Black people to prosper, homeownership continues to be a struggle.
The five-county Grand Rapids-Wyoming metro area had the worst Black homeownership rate —30.1% — among the 50 biggest U.S. metros in 2023, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
Since 2013, the rate has essentially been flat, rising slightly from 29.9, data show.
